| John from IL | posted 07-16-2005 11:59 AM ET (US) Engine software updates for marine engines have become almost as routine as they are for automotive engines. Dealers can log onto the Evinrude dealer-only website and check for updates. I was logged on yesterday and the most recent revisions for anything E-TEC was dated in May. If the build date of your engine is prior to May 2005, its likely there is an update available. Your dealer can confirm whether or not an update is available for your engine by hooking up a diagnostic program to your engines EMM and reviewing the Software part number and (more importantly) the software revision number. If the software revision number on the dealer-only site is a larger number than the revision number stored in your engines EMM, that means there's newer software available. If you still experience unusual roughness after the software is updated, your dealer should contact the technical service department and inquire about further diagnostics he can perform to resolve your issues. -John |

| seasaw | posted 07-17-2005 09:19 PM ET (US) my 90hp etec was built in may and rigged in june on my 86 montauk. it does not exhibit any problems at 2100rpm. for the first ten hours i did see some roughness at 3100 rpm's but not at 2100. now that i have approx 40 hrs on the engine, that has pretty much disappeared. good luck. |

I did have some at 1100 when the engine was new, but this has completely disappeared. I had the software update performed shortly after my break in, so I don't know if it was one or the other. |
| John from IL | posted 07-18-2005 01:51 PM ET (US) There have been some improvements to run quality in the recent software revisions. However, I will caution you that if you're looking for 100% perfect, you're probably not going to be totally satisfied. What I mean by that is that if you manipulate the throttle carefully, you can 'find' the transition point - AND if you continue to drive it at that point it will seem to run rough. All direct injection engines which use a stratified fuel charge at low rpm have a transition. Generally on a 75 or 90 hp E-TEC, it happens right around 2000 rpm. It normally occurs within a 200 rpm band. So for example, if the transion begins at 1900, its done by 2100. I've encountered transitions that start as low as 1800 and as high as 2300. It depends on hull type or style, set up (engine height, prop selection, etc) and the load in the boat. Now if this roughness you are encountering is occuring over a much wider rpm range, its possible there could be something else going on which requires a little diagnostic work by the dealer... Just a thought. -John |

I love the hole shot of the E-TEC on my 86 Montauk. so far it has performed better that i had anticipated. What has happened to me is that once I started reading all the threads on this site, I have become far more 'tuned in' as to motor height, prop size etc. so much so that I always wonder while boating if she is trimmed right? bow too high or too low? how does the wake look? prop the right one? yikes before I just jumped in and went boating! Actually it has been fun educating myself on all of these details after 9 years with my boat! |
| andiamo | posted 07-18-2005 06:03 PM ET (US) The cove we are in has an 6-9 ft tide. coming out at low tide takes caution to avoid rocks which at mid and high tide are so far below the keel as to not worry. By absolute chance the speed at which I am comfortable picking my way between these rocks happens to be 2100 rpm and I run at this speed for about 5 or 6 minutes before I am in open ocean. So for me it is a question of manipulating so as not to be on that rpm since I seem to get there naturally. I will give the engine a few more hours before doing anything about it as it is a longish way to the dealer. For those who do not know what I am talking about at this rpm my motor feels very much like my 1986 Evinrude 90 hp with that hesitation. |
